Seismologists for a day (STEM Academy)
24th January 2017

Shake, shake, shake
Boom, boom, boom
It’s an earthquake
Boom, boom, boom
Drop cover and hold

Can scientists predict earthquakes? That was the question posed for the day… We were transformed into seismologists and made our own seismometers out of recyclable materials. We learnt how they work and put them to the test. The results were amazing and helped us understand that we can know how powerful an earthquake is only while it’s happening. Videos from earthquakes around the world with buildings crushing gave us a brilliant idea. Why not construct an earthquake proof building out of plastic straws? Our main purpose was to understand how important solid foundations are. At the end we tested how much weight each “building” could hold.
