Ten years of snail farming at the American Farm School
9th November 2020

The AFS educational and demonstration snail farm has completed a decade of uninterrupted operation and training.

Everything started with the sponsorship of genetic material by a company in Rizomata, Imathia. The aim was to equip students with another skill that they could use in their professional future. The first educational - demonstration open-air farm was built in 2011, developed in an area of 70 m2. In 2012, the company "Emmanouilidi Bros" donated a closed type garden of 24 m2 and, in 2017, a closed type farm of 100 m2 was built. In the following years, the closed and fully controlled breeding unit was in full operation.

"Every year, students of the Vocational and General High School participate voluntarily in the team. They attend 40 hours of classes, on biology, physiology, breeding and processing snails. Those who wish may also receive a snail farmer certification after examinations at the ACTA organization. "Until last year, we had 43 students succeeding in the exams", said the Agronomist, Secondary school teacher and manager of snail farms, Petros Evangelou.

During this last decade, the students - under the guidance of their teachers - have produced: frozen pre-shelled pre-cooked snails, cooked snail fillet in a jar, snail caviar, collection of mucus, gel crème with snail mucus and gel cream with snail caviar.
