9th November 2020

American Farm School and Perrotis College President Dr. Panos Kanellis made a presentation at the “Future of the Agri-Food Sector in Greece” session of the Thessaloniki Summit 2020.

"Our producers show constant and remarkable interest in new knowledge. It is necessary though to attract younger producers as well and to cultivate respect of the society in the profession of the producer-farmer ", he said. He presented the current challenges faced by producers related to:

  • The relationship between product quality and cheaper production conditions
  • The continuous updating and familiarization with optimal production practices
  • Knowledge about consumer preferences
  • Proper compliance with environmental production conditions
  • Avoiding food waste in production leading to increased water and carbon footprint

"But there are also more difficult challenges to manage, such as the climate change, the pandemic and the circular economy," he said, underlying that technology could contribute in creating solutions for agricultural production, but it is not a panacea. Finally, he presented the AFS approach as an educational institution in the formation of the new agriculture.

It should be noted that, recently, Dr. Panos Kanellis was appointed as an honorary member of the Board of Directors of the Panhellenic Exporters Association (SEVE). Honorary members participate in the Board of Directors without the right to vote, but contribute significantly to the work and actions of SEVE for the benefit of extroverted entrepreneurship, international competitiveness and the economy.
