Smart Farming Awards
6th October 2020

Smart Farming Initiative project, implemented by the American Farm School, funded by AB Vassilopoulos and monitored by Bodossakis Foundation, won for third time in a row the Gold Award in the Supermarket Awards 2020 competition in two different categories.

As part of this innovative program, 12 telemetry field monitoring devices have been installed in different areas of the country, providing tools, which contribute substantially to decision-making on behalf of the farmers. These devices send their measurements to the cloud providing real-time information on a variety of environmental parameters.

More than 100 producers participate in the program, while thousands, in every corner of Greece, benefit indirectly through the development of a dedicated platform.

Smart Farming Initiative extends to animal breeders too. Pasture management can help breeders reduce feed costs. Integration of nutrients into pasture soil using drones helps to improve and enhance pastures’ capacity.

Digitanimal technology with IoT (Internet of Things) collars allows real-time remote monitoring and cloud management of animals. The coordinates and identity of the animals are monitored in google earth and are available to the breeder, but also to the final consumers.

Finally, the Program is supplemented by training and education services of producers with workshops and educational visits by groups of students in the agri-food sector at the points of application. In this way, a "community of practice" is expected to be created, which will unite the pioneer farmers, enabling them to function as "multipliers" of the program.
