The real Greece, the better you
For high school students seeking a meaningful experience abroad
Greece is a country in exciting transition. Through the American Farm School’s Greek Summer Program, high school students looking for a meaningful experience abroad can play a transformative role in a local community and change the course of their own lives in the process.
Greek Summer is 4-week service learning and cultural immersion program, where young men and women ages 15-18 years old come together to discover and engage in an impactful service learning activity in a historically, culturally, and environmentally rich setting. This exciting program combines service learning with an introduction to Greek language, culture, and current issues – from the importance of food and agriculture in the local economy, to social issues related to refugees, peace, and conflict resolution. Participants gain a holistic view of the Greek experience, broaden their perspectives, and expand their horizons.
The homestay is the program’s core experience. Participants live as members of a rural family where they work together to complete a needed community service project. Preparation for village life includes an introduction to the Greek language, local traditions, current issues and more.
The “Big Trip” reveals Greece’s amazing diversity while participants explore cultural and historic sites throughout the country. Eco-adventures in breath-taking settings include trekking Mt. Olympus, sailing pristine bays, and discovering island communities. Hands-on activities at the host campus of the American Farm School give students an understanding of sustainable food systems and the importance of food and agriculture to the culture and economy of the region. They will become global citizens at a time when the world is in desperate need of engaged thinkers willing to take independent and responsible initiative to make the world a better place.
